The Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC) has reaffirmed Princess Samiat Bada as its candidate for the upcoming July 12 council election, dismissing a petition from a coalition of 13 aspirants who have pitched tents with Kosofe House of Representatives member, Hon. Kafilat Ogbara to challenge her candidacy. The decision, finalized during the party’s primaries, has sparked controversy within the local APC chapter, with the Ikosi-Isheri Coalition of APC Council Poll Aspirants labeling Bada’s candidacy as unconstitutional.
The coalition’s petition, addressed to the APC leadership at both state and federal levels, argued that Bada’s bid for another term violates party guidelines. They claimed that Bada, who assumed office as Executive Chairman following the death of her predecessor, Alhaji Fatai, is effectively seeking a third term, which they allege contravenes the party’s constitutional provisions. The group urged the Lagos State APC, led by Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, and the national leadership under Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, to intervene and review the candidacy to prevent potential unrest within the party.
Despite the opposition, the APC maintained its support for Bada, with the primaries solidifying her position as the party’s flagbearer for Ikosi-Isheri. Sources within the party indicate that Bada’s track record and loyalty to the APC were key factors in the leadership’s decision to back her candidacy.
In response to her victory, Princess Bada expressed gratitude to the APC for its trust in her leadership. “I am deeply honored by the confidence the party has shown in me,” Bada said in a statement. “I promise to continue delivering quality service and transformative projects to the people of Ikosi-Isheri.”
The coalition, however, has vowed to continue pressing their case, with some members hinting at exploring further avenues to challenge the decision. Political analysts suggest that the dispute could deepen divisions within the Ikosi-Isheri APC, potentially impacting the party’s performance in the upcoming election.
As the council poll approaches, all eyes will be on Ikosi-Isheri to see how the APC navigates this internal crisis and whether Bada can consolidate support to lead the party to victory.
