A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Lagos State chapter, Olufemi Williams, has observed that the party stands a great chance of winning the governorship election in the state if it fields Jimi Agbaje as candidate.
Williams, who spoke in a chat with Daily Independent sometimes ago, said Agbaje’s popularity among Lagos residents and the recent crisis in the Lagos All Progressives Congress (APC) leading to several petitions and protests by members over imposition of leaders will greatly boost the PDP’s chances at the polls.
While commending the state PDP Chairman, Tunji Shelle, for uniting all the warring factions within the party, Williams warned that the leadership must not impose any candidate on Lagosians.
He counselled that a free and fair primary must be conducted where the best candidate will emerge.
“The PDP as a party in Lagos State is united. There is no question about that.
“All the leaders and members have seen the need to work together and win the governorship election which has remain elusive since 1999.
“Infighting cannot get us anywhere and that is what APC has been capitalising on.
“Having united all the factions, the  next important thing is to look for a sellable candidate that enjoys wide popularity among Lagosians and match any candidate fielded by APC action for action.
“To me, Jimi Agbaje is the best man for the job. He is not a member of the party but we can convince him to join us because he has no party for now.
“Let us not deceive ourselves. I believe Agbaje is the man with the needed requisite to win Lagos for us.
“He is still as popular as he was seven years ago when vied for the governorship slot and we all know he could have won if our election had been free and fair,” Williams said.
