Council Chairman claims contractor will return to site on Monday morning, albeit, Ifako residents continue to wait for the unfulfilled promises

Residents of Onashokun, Odulaja, Ilawe and Dosunmu Streets are living in fear as their pleas for urgent action on unfinished drainage projects falls on deaf ears of the local government.

Despite ongoing excavation works spanning two months, these streets remain plagued by exposed trenches, accumulating debris, and imminent dangers to children and motorists. The absence of cautionary measures exacerbates the risks, leaving residents vulnerable to accidents and property damage.

Speaking to our correspondent, Orebola Oresanwo, a resident of one of the Streets mentioned that the council Chairman, Barrister Moyosore Ogunlewe have been contacted on the status of the abandoned projects, but the council boss have turned deaf ears to their yearnings. “We have even contacted him on social media, his silence can be very deafening”, he said.

Criticism mounts over the lack of clarity regarding proposed drainage discharge points, with residents voicing concerns about potential environmental hazards and the local government’s disregard for community safety.

The alarming timeline for the Ilawe project, slated for completion in just eight weeks, raises doubts about the local government’s commitment to delivering quality infrastructure. With Ilawe Street stretching a considerable length, residents question the feasibility of meeting this deadline without compromising on safety and standards.

Faced with imminent threats, residents resort to makeshift solutions, erecting block walls in the trenches to safeguard their properties from soil erosion and collapse. Their actions underscore a growing sense of frustration and disillusionment with the local government’s neglect.

Despite mounting pressure from the community, the local government’s response remains inadequate, leaving residents in limbo as the rainy season looms closer.

When contacted, the council Chairman, Barrister Moyosore Ogunlewe claimed that the Ifako residents have not been neglected by his administration, that the contractor has been mobilized to resume work on Monday 15th April, 2023. As at press time, the residents of Ifako are still waiting for the Chairman to keep his promise.

As residents brace themselves for potential disaster, questions loom over the local government’s accountability and commitment to serving the best interests of the people.
