Lagos State Government has called on members of the public especially Community Leaders to take ownership of government infrastructure within their domain and prevent people from vandalizing property provided with taxpayers money.
The State Deputy Governor, Mrs. Idiat Adebule made the call on Thursday while delivering a speech at a Leadership Training for Community Development Advisory Council, CDAC, titled “From Subject to Citizens: The Role of Community Leaders in inclusive governance”.
She said that the call became necessary considering the plans of the State Government to embark on more developmental strides across all the 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas.
Adebule said, “The present administration has a stake in building the capacity of Community Development Associations because of the greater responsibilities and tasks government intends to shift to CDAs and CDCs in the journey of a truly committed government of inclusion”.
The Deputy Governor charged the community associations to assume full ownership of the management of rural water projects, newly-built roads, streetlights and selected parks already handed-over to the various communities.
She added that as the State government prepares to construct the next 181 roads and also provide social amenities to improve living standards in communities, the Community Development Associations, CDAs, should brace up to stand beside government to take ownership of the projects and protect them.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Communities and Communication, Mr. Kehinde Bamigbetan said the training aimed to set a meaningful direction for the government towards grassroots development.
He stated that the training would further enhance the knowledge of participants to know their responsibility as principal partners of the State government.
