The Lagos State Government says renovation and reconstruction will commence in the state’s public schools when the students go on holiday. The State Deputy Governor, Dr Idiat Adebule, gave the assurance on Thursday, at the inauguration and official handing over of Yaba Model Nursery and Primary Schools, in Lagos. The school was renovated by the Bunmi Adedayo Foundation (BAF). Adebule said the renovation of the schools was necessary to make teaching and learning environment conducive for students in the state. “This administration is committed to improving the standard of education and this is why we are commencing the renovation and reconstruction of public schools during the next long holiday. “We do not want to start reconstruction work when the children are in session, so that we do not disrupt school activities. “I am promising that the schools would have a new look by the next resumption; we are trying our best as a government, but government alone cannot do it. “I’m appealing to wealthy individuals and organisations to partner and support the government to improve the standard of education in the state,” she said. Adebule thanked the foundation for supporting and complementing the state government’s effort to
revamp the education system. Mr Babatunde Akinyele, Chairman, Board of Directors, BAF, said the foundation set out to bridge the standard gap between private and public schools. He said that the foundation had adopted two public primary schools in the state as a way of giving back to the society. Akinyele said that the decision was to enhance teaching and learning environment, as well as improve the standard of education of the children. “BAF focuses on a holistic transformation of early childhood learning in public primary schools in Nigeria. “We believe that education is the greatest catalyst for a prosperous, peaceful and sustainable future for Nigeria. “We are handing over Yaba Model School to the government today and our next project is the renovation and remodelling of Nathan Nursery and Primary Schools, Yaba. “We urge individuals and organisations to donate and support the project,” he said. Also speaking, Mrs Olayinka Adedayo, Chairperson of BAF and mother of the late Bunmi, said that she was happy that the dream of her late son had been fulfilled. “His dream was to nurture Nigerian children to enable them become conscious of their civic responsibilities and to become successful in a changing world toward contributing to the national and global communities,” she said. The former Head-Teacher of the school, Mr Oladele Eyiaromiose, said the school was in a deplorable state before the foundation commenced its renovation in March. He said that the new look of the school would encourage teaching and motivate leaning.
