In a bid to shield coastline communities from the detrimental effects of coastal erosion, the Lagos State Government has unveiled plans to adopt cutting-edge groin technology. Hon. Yacoob Ekundayo Alebiosu, Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, disclosed this strategic initiative during a press briefing in Lagos over the weekend.
Coastal erosion has inflicted severe damage on communities like Idotun, Origanrigan, Olomowewe, Itoke, and Asoroko in Ibeju Lekki, prompting urgent action. Groin technology, a proven method employed in other African countries, involves the construction of structures perpendicular to the shoreline to counteract erosion’s impact.
Commissioner Alebiosu highlighted ongoing efforts to collaborate with international partners, including recent discussions with Dutch companies facilitated by the Netherlands Consular. The proposed project aims to install groins along a 42km stretch from Alpha Beach to Ibeju Lekki, requiring approximately 105 groins, each costing around N12bn.
Despite the significant financial investment, Alebiosu stressed the importance of protecting ancestral lands and sustaining livelihoods dependent on the coastline. In addition to groins, the government is exploring long-term replenishment strategies akin to those utilized in the Netherlands.
Alebiosu reassured communities that the government is actively researching cost-effective groin technology adopted by other African countries to minimize expenses while ensuring effective protection. He called for patience and collaboration from residents and stakeholders, affirming the government’s unwavering commitment to addressing the pressing challenge of coastal erosion.
