The Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) meeting which took place on Friday, 21 May, 2021 at Ikoyi was one of the longest in the history of the Council which is the highest decision body in Lagos politics. Deliberation was said to have lasted for about five or six hours in what a member described as a ‘very stormy session’.

As at the time the nomination closed, a total of 333 aspirants have collected forms to vie for the chairmanship positions in 57 councils. The total cost paid into the Lagos APC account by chairmanship aspirants alone is N666m. This is unprecedented in the history of the party, made more remarkable by the fact that the aspirants, except women and youth, paid N2 million each for nomination form. The N666m generated excludes Councillorship aspirants who pay N500,000 each for nomination forms, excluding the administration fee of N50,000, except for female aspirants, who get 50% off.

With the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) giving the political parties the go ahead on preparations for the council polls, political activities in the state have been smiling to the bank.
Expectedly, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have been enjoying all the attention and with the state chapter of the party throwing open the process for the nomination of the party’s candidates for the election, party members have trooped out in high number to collect the nomination forms.

With this development, how does party cut the excesses of their candidates when they eventually get elected into public office positions?
